On Friday, 21 March, we had the pleasure of welcoming Dr Vahram Elagöz, an experienced and distinguished academic, to our school. He delivered an engaging and informative lecture on the history of spices and herbs, their various uses, and their impact both in the kitchen and in medicine.
Dr Elagöz spoke about the historical spice trade routes, placing particular emphasis on their influence on the development of the global economy. He explained how spices attracted the attention of powerful states for centuries, becoming the subject of intense rivalry and competition. We learned how major powers of the past undertook long and perilous journeys to bring spices from distant regions, striving to overcome the long-standing dominance of Arab traders and the Venetian monopoly over the spice trade.
Dr Elagöz also highlighted the contributions of prominent Armenian researchers and specialists in this field, introducing figures such as Dr Nazaret Dağavaryan, Armenak Bedevyan and Manuel Kaçuni, and discussing their scholarly work on the history of spices.
The lecture concluded with an interactive question-and-answer session. Our students asked thoughtful questions about the spices and herbs we use in daily life, and Dr Elagöz provided detailed explanations of their characteristics, health benefits and culinary applications.
